One of the most dreaded diseases of our time is cancer. While there is no cure for this disease, over the last few years, much has been learned about how it develops and how to prevent it. This information can be a key factor in helping a person to understand the risk factors they have for the disease and how they can take steps to eliminate them so they can decrease their chances of getting cancer.
Many people do not understand exactly how a person gets cancer. Cancer basically comes from the abnormal mutations of a cell or cells in the body. The human body is formed of millions of cells. These cells contain living material. These cells make up all the organs and parts of the body. In a normal adult human being, these cells grow and divide in a controlled fashion. Unfortunately, cancer starts when a cell or cells begin to act abnormally. A cell can begin to grow and divide in a rapid fashion. It can grow in an abnormal way and become out of control. These abnormal cells begin to form into a tumor and take over the good cells of the body or the organs within it.
There are a variety of reasons why the cells behave in this manner. In some cases, there are hereditary factors that can cause a person to get cancer. For some people cancer can begin to form due to their lifestyle or the environment in which they live. In most cases though, it is a combination of factors. Many people have the hereditary disposition for this type of disease and then their lifestyle and environment contribute to its growth.
While there is no cure for cancer, there is still much that can be done for those who are afflicted with the disease. Doctors can do much through surgery, medications and therapies to remove or at least slow the growth of the disease. In addition, for those who are worried they may have a predisposition to the disease due to hereditary factors, there are significant lifestyle changes that they can make to help in reducing their risk. Many people today have lifestyles that can put them at risk of cancer.
They may eat a diet that consists of mainly processed, fried or fast foods. They may not exercise much, be overweight or have other health issues that they do not tend to properly. Many people have bad habits such as smoking and drinking too much alcohol or using illegal drugs. In addition, many people are exposed on a daily basis to smog and other forms of pollution. By making changes to their life and eliminating some of these toxic elements from their daily life, much can be done to limit their risk factors for cancer.
